Overview
Periodontics is the area of dentistry focused on the health of your gums and the supporting structures of your teeth. Healthy gums are the foundation of a lasting smile, and preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease is an important part of comprehensive dental care. At our cosmetic and general family dental office in North York, we understand that untreated Periodontal Disease can lead to serious dental issues, including gum recession, receding gums, bone loss, and even tooth loss.
Our Approach to Gum Health at Thornhill Smiles
It is important for our patients to understand our role in their periodontal care. While our skilled dental team provides comprehensive diagnostics and foundational, non-surgical periodontal treatment, we are not a specialty periodontal practice.
Our North York Dental team evaluates your gum tissue, tooth root, supporting bone tissue, and overall dental health before recommending the most appropriate care.
Understanding Gum Disease:
From Plaque to Periodontitis
Gum inflammation typically begins with persistent plaque formation, a sticky film of bacteria on the teeth.
If not removed, this can lead to:
Gingivitis
The earliest stage of periodontal disease. You may notice red, swollen gums that bleed easily. At this stage, the condition is reversible with professional cleanings, proper oral hygiene, and diligent home care.
Periodontitis
If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. The gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, creating deep periodontal pockets where bacteria thrive. This can damage the gum tissue and jaw bone that support your teeth, potentially causing loose teeth, gum recession, and the need for tooth extraction.
Non-Surgical and Foundational Gum Treatments
Our North York dental team is equipped to manage early-to-moderate gum disease with effective non-surgical treatments. We use advanced diagnostic tools, including digital radiographs and Panoramic and Cone Beam CT scans, to assess your condition accurately. Treatments include:
✔ Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing) with local anesthesia: This procedure is often the first line of defense against periodontitis. We clean below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar and smooth the tooth root, helping the gum tissue heal and reattach.
✔ Application of local antibiotic to infected areas: Following Scaling and Root Planing, we may apply a local antibiotic such as Arestin directly into infected gum pockets. This targeted periodontal treatment helps control bacteria, reduce pocket depth, and support healthier gums.
When Periodontal Surgery is Necessary
In more advanced cases, periodontal surgery may be required when non-surgical treatment is not enough.
Depending on the condition, a specialist may recommend procedures such as gum grafting, a gum graft for receding gums, Flap Surgery, Flap Debridement, Osseous Surgery, or Guided Tissue Regeneration. Tissue Regeneration procedures may help restore bone tissue and supporting structures damaged by Periodontal Disease.
Gum contouring may also be used in certain cases to improve mouth aesthetics or address a gummy smile. Some procedures may use laser technology as part of treatment.
Gum Health’s Role in Other Advanced Procedures
A healthy foundation is essential before proceeding with other dental work. Our office coordinates comprehensive care for full-mouth smile makeovers, which often depend on Healthy gums.
✔ Dental Implants: If you need to replace a missing tooth, a dental implant can provide a stable long-term solution. Dental implant placement involves positioning a titanium screw in the jaw bone. Successful implant care depends on healthy gum tissue and adequate bone. When bone loss has occurred, bone grafting may be required to rebuild the area before implant placement. Depending on the location and amount of available bone, treatment may include a bone graft or sinus lifts. The implant can then be restored with a dental crown.
✔ Cosmetic Treatments: Procedures such as a dental crown, Invisalign treatment, or gum contouring generally require healthy gums and stable supporting structures.
Comprehensive Care and Surgical Referrals
Our expertise extends to many areas of dentistry. We handle routine and more complicated oral surgery, including tooth extraction and Wisdom Teeth Extraction for problematic or impacted wisdom teeth.
For complex Oral and Facial Surgery, facial trauma, Cyst Removal, biopsy services, corrective jaw procedures involving the maxillofacial region, or other advanced conditions, we refer patients to the appropriate oral surgeon or specialist.
Ensuring Your Comfort and Safety
We understand that dental procedures can cause anxiety. Patient safety and comfort are priorities, which is why we offer Sedation Dentistry options such as N2O. Local anesthesia may be used during treatment, depending on the procedure.
Our North York Dentist and dental team will explain your treatment options clearly so you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Accepted
