Periodontics – Gum Health and Treatment

Overview

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on gum health and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease. Keeping your gums healthy is just as important as taking care of your teeth, as untreated gum disease can lead to serious oral health problems, including tooth loss.

How to Maintain Healthy Gums

The best way to protect your gums from disease is by following a consistent oral hygiene routine. This includes:

  • Brushing twice daily for at least two minutes
  • Flossing once a day to remove plaque and food particles between teeth
  • Visiting your dentist or hygienist regularly for professional cleanings

Understanding Gum Disease

When gums are not properly cared for, gum disease can develop quickly. There are two primary stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. Common signs include:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Mild gum discomfort
  • Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible with professional cleanings and improved oral hygiene habits. Daily flossing is especially important in preventing it from progressing.

    What is Periodontitis?

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. At this stage, the gums pull away from the teeth, creating deep pockets where bacteria thrive. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Permanent gum and bone loss
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Early intervention is critical to prevent long-term damage.

    Treatment options for Gum Disease

    Subtle enhancements, natural-looking results.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

A non-surgical treatment where plaque and tartar are removed from below the gumline, helping to prevent further infection and inflammation.

    Open Flap Debridement

If deep gum pockets remain inflamed after a deep cleaning, a periodontist may perform open flap debridement. This involves:

  • Numbing the area with local anesthesia
  • Lifting the gums to access and clean the infected tissue
  • Removing bacteria and smoothing the roots
  • Suturing the gums back in place for proper healing.
  • Gum Grafting

For patients experiencing gum recession, gum grafting helps restore lost tissue and protect exposed tooth roots. This procedure involves taking a small piece of tissue—often from the roof of the mouth—and grafting it onto the affected area to prevent further recession and sensitivity.

    Crown Lengthening (Gummy Smile Treatment)

For patients with excess gum tissue covering their teeth, crown lengthening can reshape the gums to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This procedure can:

  • Improve oral health by making teeth easier to clean
  • Enhance the appearance of a “gummy smile”
  • Prepare teeth for restorative or cosmetic treatments like crowns or veneers
